- chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva lining the upper eyelid, with formation of giant papillae on the tarsal conjunctiva, generally associated with contact lens wear but also occurring with ocular prostheses and protruding ocular sutures. There are mild itching, burning, tearing, and ocular discomfort with increased mucous discharge on awakening. Contact lens wear becomes increasingly uncomfortable and eventually inability to tolerate the lenses develops.
