- cor·ti·cos·ter·one 18-mono·oxy·ge·nase (kor″tĭ-kosґtər-ōn mon″o-okґsə-jən-ās) [EC 1.14.15.5] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes hydroxylation of corticosteroids at the 18 position followed by oxidation of the 18-hydroxy intermediates, steps in the biosynthesis of aldosterone. The two reactions are sometimes considered separately as I (hydroxylation) and II (oxidation); defects in each reaction have been described and called corticosterone methyl oxidase deficiency, types I and II. The enzyme may be an activity of steroid 11β-monooxygenase (q.v.)
