systematic desensitization
a form of desensitization therapy in which the patient is taught to relax and is then exposed, in imagination, to the mildest or least anxiety-provoking stimuli first; as treatment progresses she or he is exposed progressively to stronger anxiety-provoking stimuli until the most extreme stimuli can be tolerated.
