organic mental disorder

organic mental disorder
a term formerly used to denote any mental disorder with a specifically known or presumed organic etiology; now discouraged because of the implication that other mental disorders do not have an organic basis. The term was also sometimes used to denote an organic mental syndrome (q.v.). Current classification divides these disorders into delirium, dementia, and amnestic and other cognitive disorders; mental disorders due to a general medical condition; and substance-related disorders.
