[DSM-IV] a mental disorder of infancy or early childhood, characterized by notably unusual and developmentally inappropriate social relatedness, usually associated with grossly pathological care. It may be the inhibited type, with failure to initiate or respond to social interactions, or the disinhibited type, with indiscriminate sociability or attachment.
