renal dysplasia

renal dysplasia
a congenital disorder of the kidney, characterized by persistence of cartilage, undifferentiated mesenchyme, and immature collecting tubules and by abnormal lobar organization; it may be unilateral or bilateral, total or subtotal, and is nearly always cystic (see multicystic renal d.). Total bilateral dysplasia is rapidly fatal in the neonatal period, while milder disease may be asymptomatic.
