exocuticle
exo·cu·ti·cle (ek″so-kuґtĭ-kəl) [exo- + L. cuticula] the outer layer of the procuticle of certain crustaceans and arthropods, which contains cuticulin, chitin, and phenolic substances that are oxidized to produce the dark pigment of the cuticle.
