paralogous genes

paralogous genes
genes in a single species that have similar DNA sequences and encode proteins with similar or related functions; they are likely to have originated from a single ancestral gene, diverging after duplication, e.g., the genes encoding α- and β-globin chains. Cf. orthologous g's.
