a severe form of periodontitis occurring after prolonged repeated bouts of necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, manifested by generalized or localized destruction of interdental bone, and characterized by periods of exacerbation in which a gray pseudomembrane may be present in affected areas and by necrotic odor.
