vertebrobasilar insufficiency
transient or intermittent ischemia of the brainstem and cerebellum due to stenosis, thrombosis, or other obstruction of the vertebral or basilar artery; this results in symptoms such as vertigo, diplopia, nystagmus, muscle weakness, and dysarthria. A similar but more severe syndrome consists of paralysis, coma, and death. Cf. subclavian steal. Called also basilar i., basilar artery syndrome, and vertebrobasilar ischemia or syndrome.
