Janus kinase

Janus kinase
Ja·nus ki·nase (JAK) (jaґnəs kiґnās) [L. Janus god of doorways] a family of non-specific protein-tyrosine kinases (q.v.) activated by binding of cytokines to their plasma membrane receptors; the kinases, bound to the cytoplasmic domains of the receptors, serve as intermediates linking the receptors to activation of the STAT family of transcription factors, which migrate to the nucleus to regulate gene expression. Mutations in JAK3 have been linked to an autosomal recessive form of severe combined immune deficiency.
