ben·zi·mid·a·zole (ben″zĭ-midґə-zōl) a dicyclic compound comprising a benzene ring and an imidazole ring, occurring as part of the nucleotide portion of vitamin B12. Substituted benzimidazoles inhibit the action of H+/K+-ATPase at the secretory surface of the parietal cells, thus blocking the final step of gastric acid production, and are used as inhibitors of gastric acid secretion. Several benzimidazoles are used as anthelmintics.
