Legionella pneumophila
the cause of legionnaires' disease and Pontiac fever. It was the first species of the genus isolated and characterized, and it has been found in lung tissue, respiratory secretions, pleural fluid, and blood and in numerous environmental sites such as soil from the banks of rivers and streams, cooling-tower water, tap water, shower heads, construction sites, and aerosolized droplets from heat-exchange systems.
