leukocyte elastase

leukocyte elastase
leu·ko·cyte elas·tase (looґko-sīt e-lasґtās) [EC 3.4.21.37] a serine endopeptidase that is secreted by certain leukocytes and catalyzes the hydrolysis of proteins, including elastin, and is inhibited by alpha1-antitrypsin. Emphysema resulting from damage to lung tissue by leukocyte elastase occurs in alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency. Called also neutrophil elastase.
