period lines

period lines
a series of light and dark lines occurring in a concentric, repeating pattern in mature myelin: the darker lines (major dense l's) represent the apposition of the inner, cytoplasmic surfaces of the Schwann cell plasma membrane; the lighter lines (intraperiod l's) bisect the spaces between the darker lines and represent the apposition of the outer surfaces of the membrane.
