cutaneous lupus erythematosus

cutaneous lupus erythematosus
one of the two main types of lupus erythematosus; it may involve only the skin or may precede involvement of other body systems. A common classification divides it into three groups: the chronic types, including discoid lupus erythematosus and lupus erythematosus profundus; the subacute types, such as neonatal lupus erythematosus; and an acute type with an edematous, erythematous eruption, a facial rash (butterfly rash), or an extensive morbilliform eruption, often with systemic exacerbations. The acute type is sometimes the presenting symptom of systemic lupus erythematosus, such as after sun exposure.
