acral-lentiginous melanoma

acral-lentiginous melanoma
(ALM) the most common type of melanoma in nonwhite individuals, but uncommon in light-skinned persons, found chiefly on the palms and soles, especially on the distal phalanges of the fingers and toes. It typically presents as an irregular, enlarging black macule and has a prolonged noninvasive stage. When on the nail fold or bed it is called a subungual melanoma. Less often it may be found on a mucosal surface, such as the vulva or vagina.
