egg membrane
any of several investments surrounding the oocyte: if derived from the oocyte itself, as the vitelline membrane, it is called primary; if from the follicular cells, as the zona pellucida, it is called secondary; if from the oviduct, as the albumen around rabbit's egg or the albumen and shell of hen's egg, it is called tertiary. Called also egg envelope and, collectively, lemma.
