intravascular oxygenator

intravascular oxygenator
a device consisting of hundreds of hollow fibers through which oxygen is drawn by a vacuum pump; it is implanted in the vena cava, where gas exchange occurs as blood flows over the fibers. Used to provide part of the gas exchange needs of patients with acute respiratory failure, allowing mechanical ventilation to be performed at reduced pressures, thus reducing or preventing oxygen toxicity and barotrauma.
