Peritrichia
Peri·trich·ia (per″ĭ-trikґe-ə) [peri- + Gr. thrix hair] a subclass of typically cone-shaped, ciliate protozoa (class Oligohymenophorea, phylum Ciliophora), characterized by the presence of a prominent oral ciliary field covering the apical end of the body and spiraling counterclockwise into the infundibulum, a paroral membrane and adoral membranelles that become peniculi, and much reduced somatic ciliature. Many are stalked and sedentary, and others are mobile, all with an aboral scopula. The free-swimming larvae have a locomotory posterior ciliary girdle. It comprises one order: Peritrichida.
