photoplethysmography
pho·to·ple·thys·mog·ra·phy (fo″to-pleth″iz-mogґrə-fe) a technique for assessing blood flow by placing a diode that emits infrared light, along with a sensor, on the surface of the skin over a blood vessel; the amount of light reflected back to the sensor is inversely proportional to the number of red blood cells flowing through the vessel.
