absolute polycythemia
an increase in red cell mass caused by a sustained overactivity of the erythroid component of the bone marrow, which may occur as a compensatory physiologic response to tissue hypoxia (see secondary p.), or as the principal manifestation of polycythemia vera. Cf. relative p.
