polyethylene glycol

polyethylene glycol
(PEG) [NF] a generic name for mixtures of condensation polymers of ethylene oxide and water, represented by the general formula H(OCH2CH2)n OH, in which n is greater than or equal to 4. The term is used in combination with a numeric suffix which indicates the approximate average molecular weight. Those with average molecular weights between 200 and 700 are liquid and those above 1000 are waxlike solids: p. glycol 3000 (n varies from 5 to 5.75) is used as a solvent and dispensing agent in pharmaceutical preparations; p. glycol 400 (n varies from 8.2 to 9.1), p. glycol 600 (n varies from 12.5 to 13.9), and p. glycol 1500 (n varies from 29 to 36) are used as ointment and suppository bases; p. glycol 1540 (n varies from 28 to 36) is used as a vehicle in pharmaceutical preparations; p. glycol 3350 is used as a laxative; p. glycol 4000 (n varies from 68 to 84) and p. glycol 6000 (n varies from 158 to 204) are used as ointment and suppository bases and as tablet excipients. Called also macrogol.
