radiography of the mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract in two stages: first a high concentration of contrast medium is injected; then when most of that has been evacuated, air or an effervescent substance is injected to inflate the organ; the light coating of contrast medium on the mucosal surface clearly reveals any abnormalities.
