Cholangiography, percutaneous transhepatic (PTC)

Cholangiography, percutaneous transhepatic (PTC)
A test of the bile duct system done by inserting a thin needle through the skin and into the liver (on the right side of the patient's abdomen). Dye is injected through the needle into the bile duct in the liver so that blockages of the bile duct can be seen on x-rays. Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography is a good example of how what seems like a very difficult medical term can be dissected and understood. Percutaneous refers to the fact that the needle is put through the skin; transhepatic means that something is going through the liver, in this case the needle; chol- has to do with the bile; and -angiography is a picture of vessels. The term "percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography" is therefore a description of this test in which a needle is put through the skin and the liver and dye is injected into the bile duct to visualize it on x-ray.
