reversal reaction

reversal reaction
a type 1 lepra reaction usually occurring during chemotherapy in borderline leprosy. It is a type of delayed hypersensitivity reaction with “upgrading” of cell-mediated immunity to Mycobacterium leprae; this process tends to move the disease toward the tuberculoid pole. The reaction is chiefly characterized by erythema, edema, tenderness of preexisting quiescent lesions, appearance of new lesions, neuritis with nerve damage, fever, adenopathy, and an elevated leukocyte count. Called also upgrading r. See also downgrading r.
