ryanodine receptor

ryanodine receptor
[from its sensitivity to the plant alkaloid ryanodine] a tetrameric receptor containing a calcium ion channel, located in the sarcoplasmic reticulum of muscle cells and the endoplasmic reticulum of nerve cells; it exists in three isoforms, each opening in response to a different activator to release stored calcium into the cytosol. Point mutations in the gene encoding this receptor are one cause of malignant hypothermia.
