proliferative retinopathy
retinopathy characterized by neovascularization of the retina and optic disk (which may project into the vitreous), proliferation of fibrous tissue, vitreous hemorrhage, and eventually retinal detachment with blindness. It occurs in a variety of inflammatory conditions and in diabetes mellitus; proliferative diabetic retinopathy is the most common type.
