- renal artery stenosis
- (RAS) narrowing of one or both renal arteries, caused by atherosclerosis or fibromuscular dysplasia, so that renal function is impaired (see also ischemic nephropathy, under nephropathy). The resultant increase in renin release by the affected kidney causes renovascular hypertension, and bilateral stenosis may result in chronic renal failure.
