antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) a multisystem inflammatory disorder characterized by the presence of circulating antiphospholipid antibodies with thrombosis (including thrombotic microangiopathy), spontaneous abortion, thrombocytopenia, valvular heart disease, and other less frequent symptoms. A severe type called catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome is characterized by infarctions of several different organs and is often fatal.
