One of a group of conjugated proteins, consisting of a combination of pigment ( i.e., a colored prosthetic group) with a protein; e.g., hemoglobin.

chro·mo·pro·tein (kro″mo-proґtēn) [chromo- + protein] a colored conjugated protein. Examples are the red hemoglobin of the higher animals, the blue hemocyanin of more primitive animals, and the red and blue pigments of seaweeds. Chromoproteins have respiratory functions and are closely related to the green chlorophyll of the higher plants.
