octanoate breath test

octanoic acid breath test (for gastric emptying) a breath test in which the patient is given a test meal containing octanoic acid labeled with carbon 13, and the breath is assessed at intervals for levels of labeled carbon dioxide; excessive carbon dioxide is seen when gastric emptying is inadequate.
