D-xylose absorption test

D-xylose absorption test
(for malabsorption syndromes) D-xylose dissolved in water is given orally to a fasting adult, followed immediately by additional water, and the amount excreted in the urine during a 5-hour period is determined. Since poor renal function may also result in low xylose absorption, blood levels are also determined at two hours. Less than normal excretion of xylose suggests intestinal malabsorption. Called also D-xylose tolerance t.
