xanthine dehydrogenase

xanthine dehydrogenase
xan·thine de·hy·dro·gen·ase (zanґthēn de-hiґdro-jən-ās) [EC 1.17.1.4] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the hydroxylation of xanthine to urate, using NAD+ as an electron acceptor; it also acts on a variety of other purines and aldehydes, including hypoxanthine. The enzyme is a molybdoflavoprotein with a bound FAD and two iron-sulfur centers. Under certain conditions the enzyme from animal tissues interconverts with the form, xanthine oxidase (q.v.). Deficiency of enzyme activity, due to isolated defect in the enzyme or to molybdenum cofactor deficiency, results in xanthinuria and deposition of xanthine calculi.
