A family of insects (order Diptera) that includes the true mosquitoes, which are all included in the subfamily Culicinae.

Cu·lic·i·dae kyü-'lis-ə-.dē n pl a family of slender long-legged dipteran flies having the body and appendages partly covered with hairs or scales and the mouthparts adapted for piercing and sucking, comprising the mosquitoes, and having active aquatic larvae known as wrigglers

Cu·lic·i·dae (ku-lisґĭ-de) the mosquitoes, a family of insects of the suborder Nematocerca, order Diptera. There are two subfamilies of particular medical interest: Anophelinae and Culicinae, containing tribes Anophelini, Aedini, Culicini, Mansoniini, and others.
