A butyrophenone drug used in neuroleptanalgesia and preanesthetic medication; the pharmacology is similar to that of haloperidol; a dopamine receptor blocker. Exhibits antiemetic effects.

dro·per·i·dol (dro-perґĭ-dol) [USP] a drug of the butyrophenone series, used for its antianxiety, sedative, and antiemetic effects as a premedication prior to surgery and during induction and maintenance of anesthesia, for the prophylaxis of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and to produce conscious sedation; administered intravenously or intramuscularly. A combination of droperidol and fentanyl citrate is administered intramuscularly to produce neuroleptanalgesia.
