An antineoplastic and antiprotozoal orphan drug used in the treatment of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in AIDS and of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense sleeping sickness.

ef·lor·ni·thine hy·dro·chlo·ride (ef-lorґnĭ-thēn″) an irreversible inhibitor of the enzyme ornithine decarboxylase applied topically to reduce growth of unwanted facial hair in females. It is also used in the treatment of African trypanosomiasis, administered intravenously. Called also DMFO.
