an antiviral drug used in the treatment of infections caused by herpesviruses, including cytomegalovirus, that are resistant to aciclovir, especially in patients with AIDS. It is administered by intravenous injection. Possible side-effects include thirst and increased urine output, nausea and vomiting, fatigue, headache, and kidney damage. Trade name: Foscavir.
