lin·o·le·ic ac·id (lin″o-leґik) a polyunsaturated 18-carbon fatty acid occurring as a major constituent in many vegetable oils. It is an essential fatty acid used in the biosynthesis of prostaglandins and cell membranes. See also table at fatty acid.
