A stage in the life cycle of sporozoans in which multiple asexual fission (schizogony) occurs, resulting in production of merozoites. SEE ALSO: schizont.

mer·ont (merґont) [mero-1 + ontos being] the asexual stage in the development of certain protozoa, especially nonsporozoa, that gives rise to merozoites. See also schizont and segmenter.
