A synthetic anti-neoplastic used intravenously in the initial therapy for acute nonlymphocytic leukemia in adults.

mi·to·xan·trone hy·dro·chlo·ride (mi″to-zanґtrōn) [USP] a DNA-intercalating agent of the anthracenedione family that causes cross-links and strand breaks and is a topoisomerase inhibitor; used as an antineoplastic agent for the treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia and the palliative treatment of advanced hormone-refractory prostate cancer. It is also used to reduce the frequency and severity of relapses in patients with secondary multiple sclerosis. Administered intravenously.
