An acute or chronic disease of cattle, dogs, pigs, horses, sheep, and goats in sub-Saharan Africa; marked by fever, anemia, and cachexia, varying in severity with the parasite and the host. A collective term for diseases caused by the protozoan parasites Trypanosoma brucei brucei, T. congolense, and T. vivax.

na·ga·na (nah-gahґnah) [Zulu, from ngana feeble, weak] any of various tsetse fly–transmitted types of trypanosomiasis in domestic animals in Africa, including cattle, horses, sheep, goats, dogs, pigs, and camels. It may be acute or chronic and its pathogenicity and symptoms vary according to factors such as the trypanosome involved and the species infected. Anemia, fever, and emaciation occur in many species, corneal opacities in horses and dogs, and abortion in cows.
