Genome, Haemophilus influenzae

Genome, Haemophilus influenzae
This bacterial genome was the first in an independent organism to be sequenced and assembled. Haemophilus influenzae has been a useful model organism, opening the door to identifying and understanding genes. Researchers have studied the genomes of particular nonhuman organisms in order to improve sequencing and analysis techniques. These nonhuman genomes provide powerful sets of data against which to compare the human genome. The Haemophilus influenzae genome contains 1.8 million base pairs and is estimated to have 1,740 genes. The sequencing of this genome was completed in 1995.
