ni·tro·fu·ran·to·in (ni″tro-fu-ranґto-in) [USP] a synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial effective against many gram-negative and gram-positive organisms, including Escherichia coli, enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, and Klebsiella and Enterobacter species; used in the treatment of urinary tract infections due to susceptible bacteria, administered orally.
