nocardiosis
A generalized disease in humans and other animals caused by Nocardia asteroides, N. otitidiscaviarum, N. transvalensis, and N. brasiliensis and characterized by primary pulmonary lesions that may be subclinical or chronic with hematogenous spread, to deep viscera, including the central nervous system; most commonly occurs in immunosuppressed patients. SYN: nocardiasis.

no·car·di·o·sis (no-kahr″de-oґsis) infection with a species of Nocardia, usually N. asteroides, but occasionally N. brasiliensis, N. farcinica, or N. otitidiscaviarum. There is usually an acute or chronic suppurative lung infection (pulmonary n.) with abscesses, but there is a marked tendency to spread to other organs such as the brain, skin, or subcutaneous tissues, sometimes with a fatal outcome. Called also nocardiasis.
