pre·oxy·gen·a·tion (pre-ok″sĭ-jən-aґshən) 1. the prolonged breathing of oxygen to produce denitrogenation before exposure to low atmospheric pressure at high altitudes, as prophylaxis against decompression sickness. 2. the admininistration of 100 percent oxygen before a procedure that produces apnea, such as the induction of anesthesia or tracheal suctioning, in order to increase the oxygen reserve in the lungs and prevent hypoxemia during the period of apnea.
