A potent folic acid antagonist used as an antimalarial agent effective against Plasmodium falciparum; a valuable suppressant, active against the asexual erythrocytic and tissue forms; also used in the treatment of toxoplasmosis.

a drug administered by mouth for the prevention and treatment of malaria, either alone or in combination with dapsone (in Maloprim); it is also used in the treatment of toxoplasmosis. Possible side-effects include loss of appetite and vomiting, and prolonged use may interfere with red blood cell production. Trade name: Daraprim.
