sal·mo·nel·lo·sis (sal″mo-nəl-oґsis) infection with a species of Salmonella; in humans it is most often manifested as food poisoning with acute gastroenteritis, vomiting, diarrhea, and occasionally septicemia; typhoid fever and paratyphoid fever are also Salmonella infections. Recurrent fevers and diarrhea with more serious gastrointestinal symptoms are seen in immunocompromised patients. Salmonella infections also cause abortions in horses and sheep and diarrhea and typhus in chickens.
