1. A large genus of plants (family Compositae), many species of which contain alkaloids that produce hepatic necrosis. 2. A common weed of the eastern U.S., formerly used in the treatment of amenorrhea and other menstrual irregularities. [L. a plant, groundsel, fr. s., an old man]

Se·ne·cio (sə-neґshe-o) [L. “old man”] a genus of plants of the family Compositae that are medicinal but can cause seneciosis in livestock. S. auґreus L. (golden ragwort) and related species were once used as emmenagogues; they contain several pyrrolizidine alkaloids. S. jacoґbae L. (tansy ragwort) contains the poisonous alkaloid jacobine.
