sporozoite

sporozoite
One of the minute elongated bodies resulting from the repeated division of the oocyst during sporogony. In the case of the malarial parasite, it is the form that is concentrated in the salivary glands and introduced into the blood by the bite of a mosquito; it enters the liver cells (exoerythrocytic cycle), whose progeny, the merozoites, infect the red blood cells to initiate clinical malaria. SYN: germinal rod, zoite, zygotoblast. [sporo- + G. zoon, animal]

n.
one of the many cells formed as a result of sporogony during the life cyle of a sporozoan. In Plasmodium sporozoites are formed by repeated divisions of the contents of the oocyst inside the body of the mosquito. The released sporozoites ultimately pass into the insect's salivary glands and await transmission to a human host at the next blood meal.

spo·ro·zo·ite (spor″o-zoґīt) [sporo- + zo- + -ite] the elongate, nucleated, motile infective stage resulting from sporogony in certain protozoa. In malaria, the sporozoites of Plasmodium spp. are liberated from the oocysts in the mosquito, accumulate in the vector's salivary glands, and are transferred to the definitive host by the bite of the infected mosquito.
